The Sir John Brunner Pub is named after a remarkably generous local man, John Tomlinson Brunner. John established a chemical factory at Winnington in the late 1870s with a chemist named Ludwig Mondin, where they used the Solvay process of producing Soda Ash. After a slow start, Brunner Mond & Company became the wealthiest British chemical company of the late 19th century. In 1926 Brunner Mond merged with three other British chemical companies to form Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI).

Brunner was a generous benefactor to the people of Northwich and other Cheshire towns. In Northwich he provided a free library (the present library on Witton Street) and re-endowed Sir John Deane’s Grammar School. He provided a building for the town’s first Salt Museum. He also gave the gold chain of office for the Chairman of the Northwich Urban District Council to mark Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. In Winsford he presented the Guildhall as his Diamond Jubilee gift to the town as well as providing the chair and desk in the council chamber for the Chairman of the Winsford Urban District Council; he also helped fund the National School at Over, Winsford. In Runcorn he purchased a disused chapel and presented it to the town to be used by the trades unions and the Friendly Societies, and in nearby Weston village he bought a disused school and gave it to the local community to serve as its village hall. He made enormous grants of money towards the construction of the Runcorn and Widnes Transporter Bridge.

The Honourable John Tomlinson Brunner died on 1 July 1919, aged 77. His estate amounted to over £906,000 (about £35 million in today’s money). After a recent refurbishment, and with careful consideration of the wishes of the community, the pub made the decision to celebrate the life John and rename the pub Sir John Brunner in March 2014.
